We found a baby pigeon. We have tried to feed it roti pieces and mashed corn flakes. But why is it not eating?

The baby pigeon seems to be 12 - 15 days old. It has been with us for half a day. It looks like a small fledging. We have not been able to open it's beek to feed it. And it does not on its own open mouth to grab food. We are worried it may be ill.|||Okay - if you're in India try this. To open its beak, gently pinch it between your thumb and forefinger from the side (near the corner of the mouth). You might also try something different. Pigeons feed by putting their beak inside their parents. You can take some dried small grain (dari, millet, etc.), make a fist of your hand with the grain inside and allow the bird to poke his beak in between your thumb and forefinger. A slight shake often gets the bird to open its mouth since this is what the parent does when it feeds. If the bird is as old as you say (here's some pics of a baby pigeons from hatch til weaning age) it will often drink by itself if you gently put its beak in a dish (c. 2.5 cm deep) of water. If you need to, you can open the bird's beak as I suggest above (hold the bird on your lap with your left hand and open it, then pop in one or two beans or peas down its throat -- be careful not to get them into the opening you see in the bottom of the mouth (that goes to its lungs). Also, the baby will need a calcium source. If you have oyster shell that's fine. Or if there's a chemist near you, then see if he has any proprietary antacids pills that are just calcium based. Those can be broken into four pieces and you can give the bird one a day. Also, hungry baby pigeons (squeakers) will sometimes eat on their own if you put the seed on a flat surface - the roundness sometimes sets off the pecking instinct. You may also tap your finger gently near the seed as if you were mom picking it up.|||Hi Pigeonguy and others, thanks to timely advise, the pigeon is doing well now and I can see it growing and now trying to fly high. We have been feeding it peas, beans and some food for pigeon (small seeds from local pet shop) along with water (more than 2.5 cm deep - this was really helpful).

|||It needs protein. The sites I found say Kitten food moistened in water. I have raised an orphan dove on it. You have to pry its beak open and give the moist food with a syringe without the needle. Its the opposite as you see how other bird species is fed. Mom Pigeon sticks her beak inside the babys instead of vice versa. Soon the baby will open its mouth when it figures out what you are trying to do. You don't look like his parents at all!|||There are special formulas for baby birds. Talk to your vet or local bird store.

Would you feed a human baby a steak? You can easily kill the bird by feeding it improper foods.

If you think it is sick, DON'T HANDLE IT! You should see your own doctor....as well as take the bird to a vet.|||don't know if your from the US or the UK. in the UK you should just phone RSPCA they will come on the same day and sort it out.|||take it to the vet|||no
