Can anyone identify this hornet?

Apparently this is a tough one. I have searched the internet high and low and nobody has this "hornet" photographed or described anywhere. Maybe you can help me:

First of all we get these things every single year and have as far back as I can remember. Because of this, I thought they were very common but nobody on the internet knows about them.

Location - I am in the greater Cincinnati area

Description - It is an extremely large and fat flying bee, larger than any insect I have ever seen. Honestly it is a little bit smaller than your average sized Hummingbird. It does not have a narrow part of its body like the wasps and hornets that you see usually. When I was a little kid I alway though it looked like the beek of Tucan Sam from Froot Loops. One time we caught one and it had a stinger 1" long (yes, one inch!)

Nest - GROUND, usually protected by a landscape stone or bush.

Behavior - Theses hornet are ULTRA aggressive. If you walk within 30 ft of their nest they will buzz you.|||That sounds like a european hornet. i get them around here too. they are extremely aggressive! and they are huge!|||try WWW.BUGGUIDE.NET You can post the pic on there and someone will be able to ID it with out a boubt.|||With the exception of agressive behavior, this sounds like a cicada killer. This is a really large wasp that lives in burrows in lawn areas. They get very big. Is this your culprit?:

http://ww2.lafayette.edu/~hollidac/cicad鈥?/a>

Hope this helps.

Additional info: August 8th

It took a while, but this hornet has a 3/4" long stinger and is aggressive. Problem is......it's Japanese.

Serving size = 4oz. or ground beef 10% fat....?

well on this website it says 4 oz. is 1/2 a cup

http://www.ask.com/web?q=convert+4+ounce鈥?/a>

So if i take ground beek and put it in 1/2 measuring cup will it be a serving size which = 4 oz?

Some say No its by weight but some say yes?|||It depends on if you measure it before or after cooking. The best way to measure ingredients is to weigh them. If you are getting serving sizes for weight management then a measuring cup is accurate enough.|||It's by weight, not by cup. So if your package is 2.24 lbs, there is 16 oz. in a pound. So that should be 36 ounces, 16oz. x 2 lbs + (1/4 lb which is 4 ozs [1/4 of 16 oz= 4oz]) which equals 36 ounces.

So if you portion it into 9 equal looking pieces, you should have 4 oz portions. When you measure for a diet, it's the weight before cooking that counts, not after.

Hope that helps.

What was the song Morgan was dancing to at the bar in Criminal Minds epi "The Big Game"?

"The Big Game" was the episode guest starring James van der Beek. The whole BAU, with the exception of Gideon, was at the bar/pub. " Morgan dances as Garcia looks on from her table where she is sitting with Hotch and Haley. Prentiss walks by with drinks and warns Morgan the one in the back could take his wallet. He laughs and says in that case he will be a broke happy man. Haley asks Prentiss how they are treating her at the BAU, and she replies everyone is really nice, Hotchner and Haley go to the dance floor and Garcia excuses herself and goes to the ladies room, walking past JJ who is playing darts 鈥?and winning." The song is a popular one ... it's on the tip of my tongue, but I just can't remember it. I would really appreciate it if anyone can put me out of my misery. It's driving me nuts!|||"Push It" by Rick Ross

It's on the album "Port of Miami"

Game to play with a 6 month old... to entertain me too?

lol.

I love playing with my 6 month old son, but a grown up can only play "beek-a-boo" for so long

Just curious as games you play with your son that are fun for you too (like his reactions are funny and entertaining or whatever)

Thanks|||can he sit up on his own yet.

i started rolling a ball to my son at that age. it wasnt long before he knew how to roll it back.

you could also hide toys under blankets, its funny watching then try to work out where it went.

buy some of those hard cardboard books, my son loves seeing the pictures and when i make farm yard animal noises :)

my son also loves shadow puppets, get a torch and make shadow birds with your fingers :)

cant think of anything else just yet xxx|||The most recent one I have been doing with my 6 month old is (if he is doing some kind of commando shuffle on the floor) take one of his toys and sit a little ways from him and try and make him crawl to you to grab the toy.

I find it fun and cute.

Question about James Franklin and Ian Butler's selection.?

They did nothing special this series to secure their place.

Though they were in squad.

Does anyone know why?

Other question is what was Van Beek doing on field yesterday?|||A mystery to me. I don't think either of them should have even been playing in the series. Watling should have been in the side ahead of Franklin, and they should also have selected Nathan McCullum in the XI instead of Butler. Franklin has done nothing special in international cricket since he came back from that long injury layoff. All he's done is one matchwinning knock in a T20 world cup warmup match. And the same could be said for Butler, he's done nothing for NZ over the last few years.

Logan van Beek was the 13th man. Obviously a susbstitute fielder was required to take the place of Frankin with that heel injury he had. And Nathan McCullum, who was the designated 12th man, had some sort of twinge from warmups as well so he couldn't sub-field.

Often in both tests and ODIs, when a sub fielder is required and the 12th man is unavailable, in home matches, a local player who plays for the province hosting the match (in this case Canterbury) gets the chance to do some substitute fielding. And they normally opt for the younger ones where possible.|||NZ cricket isn't exactly awash with talent. I would say they're playing it safe with 2 experienced bowlers who've been in decent form in the domestic competition, they're probably in the squad as a backup and to pass on their experience of the pressure of international tests to the debutants.|||experimenting

Why did my gf get mad at this thing I said.?

My gf and I were together. She has a pet bird she really likes. I was with her and she was taking care of her sick bird, Peaches. She was trying to stick a thermometer in the birds beek. She said "Whats a birds temp supposed to be." I then said. "Candace, I think a bird turns out nicely at 275." She gave me this really evil squinty look.

Why was she mad.|||Candace needs to learn to appreciate a quick wit like yours. Just explain to her that birds are cold blooded so it doesn't really matter and you were just trying to make lite of the matter since it's irrelevant anyway. Note, birds aren't really cold blooded but are rather warm blooded and would be between 99 and 110 degrees F.

Although you quick wit only earns you a B. To have gotten an A, you should have told her that she'd get a better reading if she were to stick the thermometer up the bird's poop shoot instead. While getting in a bit of humor with that comment, you'd be perceived as being more helpful in the matter.|||Well, she's genuinely concerned for her bird who is sick. And joking about it being dead and cooked isn't what she would want to hear.

She won't be mad for long.

But next time be a little more sensitive to her feelings.

Turkeys???

Ok I got a male full grown Tom turkey. Now I want to know two things.

1: I have been trying to get it to eat dry corn, but it seems to not want to eat it. What do turkeys eat?

2: He can change the color of his snood (the flesh that lays over his beek) and his wattle, from red to white. What does the colors mean?|||FEED turkeys cracked or whole kernel corn, sunflower seeds, oats, wheat, or non-medicated commercial poultry or turkey rations.

If you want to actually fatten the turkey then some type of fat must be added to the commercial feed. Commercial feeds are set up for "medium" weight gain. Check with your local 4-h or county extension office for more feeding information.

http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:ESNP鈥?/a>

The color changes of the snood and wattle seem to be something male plumage fowl can do because they will eventually strut and primp for females.|||1: I assume you are plumping him up for turkey season and Thanksgiving. They eat ticks, other bugs, and berries.

2: Colors means he's horny. Its mating season, colors attract the hens.|||He is in turkey heat.lol Jamie.|||wow he has the hots for you

Could be the same shape. |||wow that's really interesting, specially the part where an old man came and took it away and now nobody knows where it is... it kindof looks like some kind of dog but... weird, really weird lol, thanks for sharing the info!|||It's hard to tell being quite decomposed and bloated, and with no way of knowing the size, but based on the second picture the eyes appear to be forward facing, so not a dog or similar animal. Also based on the second picture, that doesn't appear to be a beak, especially the low portion. As stated by Jeff Corwin, a bloated decomposing raccoon is more likely. Possible fur is also evident on the second photo.|||to the answerer who says turtle..

do you not realize that turtles don't have legs with joints like that? turtles have flippers.

have you ever seen a turtle without a shell? no. because their shell is BUILT IN to them, it doesnt just 'fall off'. it is part of their rib system.

with what you described you bird is very, very sick. I'm so sorry.

Please tell your parents you have to take him to a vet. if they don't agree to pay for it, call a vet yourself and explain the situation to them. They might take care of the bird for free.

Please, please don't let the poor bird suffer.

And be prepared - your bird might be dying. Be strong. I'm really sorry.

Until you can get him to a vet dip is beak into the water to help him drink (careful not to drown him...and not his whole beak...just enough so he can drink) and offer him soft foods as he probably doesn't have the strength to eat the seed. Prakeets itching each other?

My male parakeet keeps itching my female parakeet on the neck with his beek. She seems to be liking it and squaks whenever he stops. What is this?|||Your male Parakeet is scratching/nuzzling her - it is love

You use the word itch incorrectly. Itch is a feeling that must be scratched. Itching is not an action performed.|||CALM DOWN ever heard of grooming!!|||This is called grooming. It is a perfectly normal behavior for birds.

An itch is an irritation. A SCRATCH is what you do to make an itch go away.|||Birds preen eachother. It is social among birds to do this as grooming eachother. it makes snishing sounds and he bits his lower beek with the upper one a alot.Is he sick?|||When he bites his lower beak, is he grinding it, my African Grey does this when he is sleepy and content, experts cannot find a reason for this, they seem to do it simply because they want to.|||Hookbill bird beaks grow continuously -- he is grinding it down -- which is normal so that it will retain the shape he desires.|||Hissing or snishing? haha...your feathered one is probablt resting %26amp; simply telling you to leave it alone...this is natural for feathered ones...Grinding the beak also signifies contentment %26amp; readying for rest_time...Simply leave your bird alone during such times. Can i clip parroletts wings if they are gonna breed and be held too?

just came home with 2 one year old parroletts. got them in brooklyn. i was gonna trim their wings so we can handle them and they wont fly around. but my question is can they still do the breeding thing with their wings clipped. and also the girls beek was very long and when i picked her up she nipped on my finger. not too hard but tip of her beak fell off. is that some kind of vitamin deficientcy or why would that happen|||First if your birds have never had their wings clipped Do Not do it now.If you are intending to breed from them then you must Never clip their wings.

As breeding birds need their wings in the act of mateing, as long as it was only the tip of it's bek that came off your bird will be ok

But it needs Cuttle bone and green veg to maintain it's health along with a good diet,

Green veg such as Broccoli,Kale, Celery, are all good for your bird to maintain good health.

But Do Not clip their wings for any reason or you could have more problems than you could imagine.|||when birds mate it does not mater if there wings are clipped or not and for the beak problem you should get them cuddle bones to keep there beaks in good shape|||you really need to ask a vet these questions so you get the correct answers.|||no you should not because they might want to fly

I have a yongone of parrot in my house how do i feed him keep him?

this yongone was felt from a hole in my bulding wher the parent parrot layed the egg he is just tow or one week old he has a red beek with gree feathers pls help me and sugest me some tips can we give him chilly|||if the chick is still this young he needs to be kept warm in a brooder. get a plastic rubber maid container or a glass fish tank, take a heating pad set on low and and place it halfway under the tank. This way you have half of the bottom covered with the heat source the other half not. so that when the chick is too hot he can move to the cooler side or vice versa. fill the bottom with large pine shavings...NOT cedar. about 2 inches deep. cover the pine shavings with a papertowel. place a themometer on the inside wall of your home made brooder and keep it at about 90 degrees until the baby feathers out. once feather out you can keep it at 80 and then when he begins to fledge (learn to fly) you can move him out of there. and into a cage with low perches. drill large 1 inch holes on the top for ventilation of the brooder.

feeding: at 2 weeks should be 4 times per day. its best to just keep the crop full. you need to get a feeding syringe at your local pet shop and chick formula. use hot water to mix the formula. You need a candy themometer to make sure that it is not hotter than 105 and not colder than 101. feed the chick from the left side...your right of the mouth. At first you may not get a feeding response from him (bobbing head) massage the sides of his beak to initiate this response and trickle the formula into his mouth from his left side. You can go faster if he is bobbing is head. You must be very careful. If he is not bobbing you can asperate him and he will die almost instantly. if the formula is too hot you can cause crop burn. if the formula is too low you can cause crop stasis which is an infection that will kill him. take him to a vet and they will be better able to help you. there is alot involved. at any rate he needs to be fed asap im sure. also, nature has it's way of weeding the sick out. the baby bird probably did not fall out of the nest but rather the mother may have kicked him out because he was ill or diseased. birds have an instict of knowing this. Or he may be older than what you think and he was fledging and fell out. good luck|||talk to him sweetly everyday, no rough or harsh sounds, it gets very sensitive and irritable, u have to give a lot of ur time and talk to him, i have mine for a week, i am still working on it now it is eating from my hand!

I think i can give u the answer. Your female parakeet seemed lonely when u first had her and if u didnt let her out at all and interact with her, she got lonely. Then, when u got the male, she seemed happy and she dosint want him to go, so she protects him and makes him feel nervous maybe bcuz he is in a new enviornment. All u have to do is interact with them more and maybe try letting them out atleast once a day or every other day. I tried it and its getting better and better. Does ur female seem protective over ur male parakeet at all?

My dove egg has a fully formed been is she ready to hatch and I see her flexing her tiny wings inside the egg ?

I actuly see her beek and the line where it opens so clearly her head is pointed down her wings and legs I have both seen be flexed is she going to come out soon|||It sounds like she's ready to hatch, however you should let it happen naturally. It can take quite a while for the hatchling to completely emerge but its very important that you let the chick do it on its own.

She will look exhausted and stop for a while, and then start up again, and you'll feel like you should help, but dont.

They need to use the fluids in the shell for the energy to complete the shell breaking and they are vitally important for the chick to be able to develop properly.

Have fun watching!!!

1 Tbsp ground comino (cumin seed)

Add meat, chipotle sauce, tomatoes and spices to pot and bring to boil. Reduce heat to simmer till meat is tender (about an hour and a half.)

BIRDHOUSE entry holes are being eaten by what?

I have 8 cedar birdhouses in my yard. Recently, after 2 years of hanging peacefully in the trees, I noticed that something has eaten around the holes - openings in them all, obviously something with teeth or a sharp beek. We have mice, squirrels and woodpeckers around here in winter -- any ideas what has done this? I am guessing it was maybe the woodpecker, that they make the hole larger so they can use the box to nest in themselves?|||maybe the woodpecker but more likely the squirrels. you can stop them by cutting a piece of fine wire screen into a square big enough to extend a couple of inches beyond the opening and tacking it on...cut out the middle of course so the opening can be used by birds.|||absolutely positively SQUIRRELS. they seem to like cedar wood especially. They are eating it. another favorite is T11 siding I think its outside layer might be cedar or perhaps the glue is tasty.|||I am wondering if wood peckers nest in houses? We have woodpeckers but I haven't ever seen them at a bird house or a feeder. If woodpeckers did it,it would be for eating bugs and the hole would be almost perfectly round. I would sooner guess squirrels because they make a mess of anything they can find. interesting question!|||Squirrels|||Most likely woodpeckers. I worked at a nature preserve for a long time and experienced the same thing with our bluebird boxes. The woodpeckers are trying to get to the spiders, bees, etc. in and around the wood. As a result, different (larger) species of birds will attempt to nest in your birdhouses.|||mice wouldn't need to make the holes bigger. Squirrels would need to, and they are champion gnawers. They get my vote.|||My guess is either woodpeckers or termites. Just because it's cedar, it doesn't mean that it will repell termites.

Why does my cockatail make this weird noise?

i have a female cockatail and right now she is making this noise with her beak and moving her mouth back and forth its really irritating me right now why is she doing this what does it mean? it sounds like she is griding her beek|||She is grinding her beak. They do it when they are content, usually before naps and bedtime.

This sound is natural, she will always do this. It should make you happy that your bird is content and relaxed...not irritated. She's not doing it to annoy you.|||its perfectly normal. she is very happy and content where she is and what she is doing. probbably ready to sleep and take a nap.|||Hahaa. I thought the same way when my uncle's senegals were doing it. It means she's feeling happy and content.

awww... isn't that cute?

Don't think about it as irritating; think about it as good and your doing your job as an owner.|||mine does the same thing. it is perfectly normal. sometimes they like to do it to sharpen their beaks. i would highly suggest getting a cuddle bone(if you don't have one) because it cuts this down to a minimum. and if i were to guess it is usually befores she goes to sleep.

What great contributions did George Berkeley make to affect 18th and 19th century philosophy?

Hey everyone!! I have been reading on this guy for hours now, and maybe I am just to spacy now to comprehend things but I thought I would shoot the question out there to see what everyone else thought :) Our teacher is all for us asking questions and finding out other peoples opinions as much as possiable!! In fact she was the one that suggested this site!! Thanks ;)~

Well see here is the thing, I have read alot of stuff so far, the wikipedia, my text beek and a few other sources. I have never taken philosophy -- I see that this will be the last philosophy class I take as I suck at this stuff!! hehehe, but I can't seem to grasp what exactly this guy did to make him so flippen' awesome!! What was Berekely's great contributions? I don't seem to get it ;)~|||Give me an old 'realist" like Aristotle any time.. Don't cloud your mind with people like the good bishop or really "silly" ones like Hume who led to the idiocy of "positivism"|||George Berkeley was one of the three most famous eighteenth century British Empiricists (see LOCKE, JOHN and HUME, DAVID). He is best known for his motto, esse is percipi, to be is to be perceived. He was an idealist: everything that exists is either a mind or depends for its existence upon a mind. He was an immaterialist: matter does not exist. He accepted the seemingly outrageous position that ordinary physical objects are composed solely of ideas, which are inherently mental. He wrote on vision, mathematics, Newtonian mechanics, economics, and medicine as well as philosophy.

According to Berkeley, the world consists of nothing but minds and ideas. Ordinary objects are collections of ideas. Already in his discussion of vision, he argued that one learns to coordinate ideas of sight and touch to judge distance, magnitude, and figure, properties which are immediately perceived only by touch. The ideas of one sense become signs of ideas of the other senses. In his philosophical writings, this coordination of regularly occurring ideas becomes the way the world is known and the way humans construct real things. If there are only minds and ideas, there is no place for some scientific constructs. Newtonian absolute space and time disappear. Time becomes nothing but the succession of ideas in individual minds (PHK 搂98). Motion is entirely object-relative (PHK 搂搂112-117). Science becomes nothing more than a system of natural signs. With the banishing of abstraction, mathematics is reduced to a system of signs in which words or numerals signify other words or numerals (PHK 搂122). Space is reduced to sensible extension, and since one cannot actually divide a piece of extension into an infinite number of sensible parts, various geometrical paradoxes dissolve. As Berkeley understands them, science and Christian theology become compatible.

Is this normal for a parakeet?

I got a parakeet as a gift for Christmas. The book i have on parakeets doesn't mention anything about this so I don't know, but is a normal for my parakeet to scrape his beak against his perch? Could he be sick? Or should i get him sonething to rub his beek against? Thanks.|||This is normal. Parakeets do this because they are smoothing down their beak to prevent illness. If in doubt, I recommend you buy it a cuttlebone or a mineral rock, which will not only give it vitamins and minerals, it will also allow your bird a place to rub its beak against. I have parakeets myself and they always do this, so there is nothing to worry about. This is natural.|||its normal but i would get him something soft to rub his head against|||so normal its common. my birds do it all the time. parrekets do to shorten or sharp their beaks. also they could be getting soming off of there beak thats stuck. you can bye pirch sand paper for their claws and beak trust me its hard to clip both of them|||I don't see nothing wrong with that,, But ya you should get things in his cage to play with and snacks.... What can my baby lovebird chew on?

He is 1 and a half month old baby lovebird who loves to cuddle but when hes hipper he likes to bite fingers but you cant really feel it its like a nibble i know hes probably trying to test out his beek but i prefer he didnt use my fingers!incase its worse when he gets older... is there anything else that they like to chew on that i can make or buy...thank you|||A few ideas for toys you can make to entertain your lovebird. I would advise you research lovebirds on the internet to find out what their natural behavior is then you might be inspired to make toys that are more suited to him.

Cut square pieces of denim 25cm x 25cm, then you need a needle and cotton. You can sow on buttons, lots of different ones, shiny and colorful. Pieces of fabric, preferably cotton, tie strips of fabric and sew it to the denim square. If you have beads available, make bunches of beads or single beads scattered about. You must ensure you secure the small beads or buttons properly.

If he has a curious nature when he is around you, offer him things from around the house to look at. Try teaspoon, wooden spoon (he might chew the end a bit), plastic cup, cake measuring spoon set, couple toothpicks with the ends broken off. You can also add a few pieces of fruit to the items to investigate. He might not take to it immediately depending on how nervous he is of new things. If he is nervous you should offer him the same items everytime you try, once he has time to suss out the items he will start to get involved.

Straw or dry grass toys make good toys to unpick.

If you have childrens toys to your diposal, toy car, marble, ping pong ball, other small balls might be too heavy and hurt him if rolled towards him.

The velcro off a wallet, not the soft nylon hair, the hard spiky side is better.|||Both of these items can be bought at local pet stores:

Soft Wood

Cuttle Bone

You've probably heard of a cuttle bone, it gives calcium to the beak and trims the beak!

Soft wood is just something he can chew on, female birds need this while breeding.

Also you can snap off some branches from a Malbury tree (Non-Toxic tree) and put them on top of his cage, he may trim his beak on it as he plays, they love these branches because it feels like being out in the wild, I use malbury branches for all of my parakeets.

Best answer? ;)|||Your Love bird can chew on either soft wood or a cuttle bone. Both can be bought at any pet store that sells bird supplies.

-- PA|||Birds use cuttle bone for keeping their beaks in good condition so I suggest you get one. It also acts as a good thing to chew on. I reccomend it. It'll keep his beak strong too.

Two of my parakeets have a brown spot on their beek!?

ok i have 4 parakeets and two of them have like this kind of some brown spot on top of their beak. They were normal a couple of weeks ago and i noticed this spot like a week ago but i didnt kno what it was. my other two parakeets are nice and healthy. the ones that have the brown spots do not look sick. but the weird thing is that 1 of the birds that has this brown spot at first the thing on top of its beak was blue and now it brown like a female. Another thing is that the other parakeet thats sick also has like purple spots on its beak and on top of it beak. i dont if this one is like this b/c its wings are short and every time it tries to fly it cant and lands very hard on the floor. so if any1 can help plz help. SORRY FOR IT BEING SO LONG|||Parakeet ceres change colors as they age. You might be seeing the color change that is typically normal for a parakeet. AS for the one that "Lands very hard on the floor", this means that it's wings are not clipped properly. You might want to stop putting the bird in places where it will want to fly. If it is flying when you take the bird out of the cage, then use more caution so that it cannot just drop to the floor. This can cause some serious damage to the poor little thing.

The sick parakeet, you should separate from the healthy guys so that the other birds do not get sick.|||it could just be a color thing not an illness|||Your Parakeets are fine.....Your Parakeets Were Young.....Then When Your Parakeets Reach The Age Of 6-8months The Cere Will Change Colors......... * Females - White/light-blue, tan, or brown cere. This is true for all varieties. With the development of brown color is a flaky texture. This can build up to be about a centimeter thick.

* Males -

o Blue or purplish-blue cere in normal varieties only.

o Bright violet or pink (does not change after youth) occurs in the following varieties: recessive pied, lutino/albino, dark-eyed clear, lacewing, and fallow

Slim Jim beek jerky Original Good for you?

Is this good for you?|||You forgot to look at the ingredients list...note the preservatives and other unhealthy stuff! No, it is not good for you.|||Out of 150 calories, we've got 35 from fat, about 100 from protein, and rounding off, about 15 from carbs. That's not too bad - lots of protein if you're building muscle.

The big problem here, is the Sodium, in other words, salt! If you are bodybuilding, trying to get defined muscles, will encourage your body to retain water, causing a little bloating and a soft appearance. Overall, you should probably avoid too much salt.

If you have a bag once a week, you aren't killing yourself, or wrecking your diet. But could you do better with those 150 calories? You bet. If you are having a bag every day, or even 3-4 a week, you are probably getting too much salt.|||Is it "good" for you? Well, it isn't the absolute best choice but it's much better for you than typical junk food. If your other choices are chips, candy, etc then yes, choose the jerky. It has less fat and at least it's high in protein. It's very high in sodium tho, which will cause your body to retain water weight.|||ITS NOT THE BEST THING FOR YOU, INSTEAD, (WHEN U DO YOUR GROCERY SHOPPING AT THE GAS STATION), GET SOMETHING NATURAL AND HEALTHY WITH NO ADDED THINGS IF U CAN, GET SOME WATER AND (I DONT REALLY KNO WHATS ALL THERE)U WONT DIE FROM BEEF JERKEY!!! ITS JUST BETTER IF U GO GROCERY SHOPPING AT A REAL GROCERY STORE. IF U GOT A HOUSE WHERE U CAN SHOWER AND CLEAN UP, ALMOST ANYONE WILL GIVE A CLEAN PERSON A RIDE! EXSPEACIALLY TO THE GROCERY STORE, OR GET A JOB!

How unhealthy is beef jerky?

As it comes across from the packaging, beek jerky has very little fat (1g per small packet), and very little calories to it.

I've also heard that it could be lined up to replace pork scratchings in the UK because they're so much better for you.

What's the truth about it all? It tastes good, so sods law it'll probably be bad for me in some way. Salt content maybe?

Any advice would be greatly received as living in the UK, I know very little about a US product like this.|||If you're buying the pre-packaged stuff, there are a lot of chemicals in it. If you're buying it from a small vendor, or making it yourself, there is going to be less salt, and little to no chemical additives or preservatives.

You are correct, there is little to no fat. When I make mine, I have the butcher trim all the fat off. Nothing but pure protein.|||Aside from the fact that it might be more difficult to digest (because its dried), the only bad thing I can think of is the HUGE salt content and perhaps the preservatives. But if you don't care about those things, well....

Our bird has a long and dirty beak?

Hi there, me and my mother are asking for help because our finch has a bigger beak then ever, she never uses the cottle bone to file her beak and her beek is turning dirty or dark and it looks like it needs cleaning. We don't know what to do so we're asking for people's help and honest opinions. Thanks for taking the time to write and answer our big concern!|||I think you mean cuttle bone? Is the soft side of the bone facing the inside of the cage?

Replace all perches with branches with bark and leaves on them. It is natural for a bird to feak it's beak which cleans it. If you can hold the bird, wet your fingers and clean the beak and look to see if there is a problem like a crack in the beak.

It may need to be trimmed. Buy a mineral block - a small one. Also check that the cuttle bone is right near a perch - the new ones and the soft part is inside.

Where are you? I can come and check the bird out and perhaps trim the beak.,

We found a baby pigeon. We have tried to feed it roti pieces and mashed corn flakes. But why is it not eating?

The baby pigeon seems to be 12 - 15 days old. It has been with us for half a day. It looks like a small fledging. We have not been able to open it's beek to feed it. And it does not on its own open mouth to grab food. We are worried it may be ill.|||Okay - if you're in India try this. To open its beak, gently pinch it between your thumb and forefinger from the side (near the corner of the mouth). You might also try something different. Pigeons feed by putting their beak inside their parents. You can take some dried small grain (dari, millet, etc.), make a fist of your hand with the grain inside and allow the bird to poke his beak in between your thumb and forefinger. A slight shake often gets the bird to open its mouth since this is what the parent does when it feeds. If the bird is as old as you say (here's some pics of a baby pigeons from hatch til weaning age) it will often drink by itself if you gently put its beak in a dish (c. 2.5 cm deep) of water. If you need to, you can open the bird's beak as I suggest above (hold the bird on your lap with your left hand and open it, then pop in one or two beans or peas down its throat -- be careful not to get them into the opening you see in the bottom of the mouth (that goes to its lungs). Also, the baby will need a calcium source. If you have oyster shell that's fine. Or if there's a chemist near you, then see if he has any proprietary antacids pills that are just calcium based. Those can be broken into four pieces and you can give the bird one a day. Also, hungry baby pigeons (squeakers) will sometimes eat on their own if you put the seed on a flat surface - the roundness sometimes sets off the pecking instinct. You may also tap your finger gently near the seed as if you were mom picking it up.|||Hi Pigeonguy and others, thanks to timely advise, the pigeon is doing well now and I can see it growing and now trying to fly high. We have been feeding it peas, beans and some food for pigeon (small seeds from local pet shop) along with water (more than 2.5 cm deep - this was really helpful).

How can i save a fallen bird?

There's a fallen bird in my back yard... it's not that young but it still can't fly and it seems he still gets fed by his mom i can't reach the nest becouse it's in the roof of my house and it's 3 levels soo ... i just wondered how he survived the fall.. i left some water and wet bread near him but maybe i need to get a worm and a pretend beek to feed him.. i really don't know what to do and i don't want him to die...|||The mom is probably still around watching her baby. All you have to do is take a small box or a strawberry basket, put some grass in it, put the little bird in the box, and place it somewhere in a tree. Someplace that you can reach. The mom will continue to take care of it and feed it from there. No need to try to feed it yourself. Just make sure it is safe from cats. (Whoever said to stomp on it is an idiot.)|||Please leave the bird alone. It's parents are caring for it, and it is supposed to be on the ground.

Baby birds leave the nest (fledge) before they can fly. They are called FLEDGLINGS and are supposed to be on the ground. It's normal. He didn't fall - he jumped - intentionally.

Do not feed the bird. Do not leave food anywhere near it. You are going to attract predators.

Leave the bird alone, and stay away so the parents can do their job. They know how to care for their babies - you do not.|||Bird have NO SENSE OF SMELL. Its a myth the mom wont come back if you touch it. If you leave it where you found it the parents will still care for it and feed it on the ground. if you know for a fact that the parent birds are gone, there is no way to put the baby back, or the babies are cold and limp, then they need to be rescued. Keep him in a small, dark, covered box with holes punched in the lid. Warm the babies by positioning a heating pad, set on LOW, under the box. Other ways to warm the babies are to fill a ziplock bag or rubber glove with warm water and place it in the box, or microwave a dish towel for 25 seconds (only warm enough that you can place the towel over your face) and use that. You can also hang a 40 watt light bulb over the box to produce warmth. Do NOT put fresh green grass in the box because the moisture in it will chill them. You may line the box with paper towels. Do NOT pet the baby. They may gape (open their beaks) but do NOT feed them anything including milk, water, honey, egg or homemade formula because their stomachs will not tolerate these items and it is easy to drown a baby bird with fluid. u can only feed baby bird formula with a syringe or dropper which u can find in any pet store, they cost around $4.00 to $7.00. Call a Wildlife Rehabilitator for help as soon as possible|||Do not help it!

I have a love bird who's going on 10 and has a spot on his beek that I haven't seen before. What is this?

It's a male love bird. He'll be ten in December. He's been with me ever since like he was a few weeks old. He's acting perfectly normal. He chirps like he normally would. He's got the right food, he's eating and drinks his water. I clean out both multiple times a day. I take him out of the age usually like two or three times a week. The only thing he's been doing different is that when he flies off this tree (which he chewed off all the leaves) in my room, he flies onto the floor and starts walking.

He hasn't gotten hurt or anything. He's probably had this spot for like three weeks now. It hasn't gotten worse or anything. He tries to chew on the rug, even though there's nothing on it. I tried lightly wiping his beek, but it doesn't look like it's something. I asked my parents about it and they said it's likely just an old age spot.

You guy's probably know more about this than I do. I might bring him to the Vet to be safe. Have any of your guy's birds ever had anything similar?|||I have birds in my room that I let "fly freely" and this has alkso happened with me a few times... basically it is a "bruise"... he must have bumped into something or flown into the wall, etc. It will eventually go away, or grow out... but if you notice any bleeding or redness/swelling around his nares, then I would take him to an avian vet... but from what you are describing, it looks like a "beak bruise" and he should be okay.

With some color varieties, like albinos, lutinos, fallows, and some recessive pieds like harlequins, both males and females have beige or pink colored ceres. Other visual sexing methods include females having an almost invisible, whitish rings around their nostrils, and males having more rounded, bulbous ceres, both of which are often hard to recognize to the untrained eye. How do i cook BEEK SHANK?

im cooking tonight for 3 more people and me (4)

i want to know how to cook beef shank to make it tasty.my mom cooks it all the time and she said to use flour to coat it and then put it in a pan with onions and just to cook it until its done

it tastes good and we just put steak sause on it (it tastes like steak)

i wanted to know is there anyway way i can make it tender like marinading it in anything(im not buying anything tonight)i have worchester sauce, and like white, red cooking wine, onions, salt, flour, sugar, garlic powder, garlic cloves, ginger, nutmeg, butter, pepper, saffr鈥?sauce

and a few other things...can i marinade it in butter and garlic? WHAT CAN I MARINADE IT WITHlol?????? why does my mom put flour and onions with it...i want to do it like that but its hard a bit and a little chewy ITS DA BOMB!but i want to tweak it to my tastes buds and i want it to taste the way i want. what can i do so it is soft and tender......can i seasont the flour (i think she ''batters it''') and if i do that then when do i put onions in it???

PLEASE I KNOW I MADE THIS A LITTLE HARD I JUST HAVE LOTS OF QUESTIONS ON BEEK SHANK ANSWER all the questions i asked with details please..... i need the help tonight|||You can marinade it in dry red wine, soy sauce and garlic, but don't marinade it in butter and garlic. I don't know how much time you have, so you may not have enough time to really marinade it.

Your mother probably does season the flour. Try garlic salt (or garlic powder and salt) and pepper seasoned flour. The flour will help the broth thicken as it cooks. Go ahead and place in seasoned flour, then brown on medium high to high heat in an oiled pan to brown all sides of the meat. For moisture, add some dry red wine (it will add a lovely flavor) and beef broth, and then add your onions to cook with the meat. Thyme would probably be quite good with it since it's a good herb to use with beef. Shank is not a very tender cut of meat, so the longer you can cook it, the better.

I hope I have answered your questions for you.|||Your mom is right, it needs to be braised but you can add a lot of extra flavor to it. I love this recipe from an old recipe book that came with my mom's Revere Ware pots. I serve it with mashed potatoes but wide egg noodles would also be good.

Braised Beef Shanks in Wine

Ingredients

4 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 cup flour

4 each beef shanks, about 6-8 ounces each

Salt and black pepper

2 1/4 cups diced onions

1 cup diced celery

1 cup diced carrots

3 tablespoons chopped garlic

2 bay leaves

2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme or 1 1/2 tsp dried thyme

1 1/2 cups dry red wine

1 tbs Worcestershire sauce

2 quarts low salt beef stock

In a large stock pot or braising pot, add the oil. Season the shanks with salt and pepper. Dredge the shanks in the flour, coating each side completely. When the oil is hot, sear the shanks for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, or until very brown on all sides. Remove the shanks and set aside. Add the onions to the pan and saute for 2 -3 minutes or until they start to turn clear. Add the celery and carrots and continue to saute for 2 minutes, stirring them occassionally. Stir in the garlic, bay leaves, and thyme and cook everything for 2-3 minutes. It should smell fantastic. Pour in the red wine, with the burner at medium high heat to deglaze the pan.Scrape the bottom and sides to get up all the browned particles. Add the stock and Worcestershire to the wine and bring the liquid up to a boil. Add the shanks and and reduce to a simmer and continue to cook for about 2 hours, Baste the shanks often, The meat should be beginning to fall of the bone. The broth should be like a stew. Taste the sauce and season to taste with salt and pepper. You can also put this in the crock pot after you brown the meat and deglaze the pan. Pour the sauce into the crock pot over the browned shanks and just cook everything on low for several hours. I sometimes add peeled fresh carrots cut in 3 inch sections, button mushrooms, and quartered white potatoes in the crock for a quick complete meal. Enjoy!

And i got him the beek trimmers to use himself but it doesnt help. And i was told to put bird gravel in his food but that didnt work either. Wut do i do??|||Chew toys!!! Wood, things for him to basically gnaw at and wear his beak down|||Does he have a cuttle fish and a calcium perch in his cage? These will both help keep his beak in shape.|||An overgrown beak can be an indicator for an underlying problem, such as liver disease. I have an elderly cockatiel who suffers from this, and now that he is on medication and a special diet to support his liver, his beak does not overgrow to anything like the same extent.

If I were you, I would take your bird to an AVIAN (bird-qualified) vet and have him properly checked out. A general vet is no good at all, they cannot perform the diagnostic testing required to get to the bottom of birds' health problems.

what should i feed water and bedding for them and basically everything

thank you all ,sarah|||Hi there,

I sounds like your baby just has some dried food stuck to his beak. At 16 and 21 days old they are old enough to be handled (I handle my babies from about 10 days old to get them used to people, and even newly hatched if I need to without any ill effects).

A cotton bud with some warm water should loosen the food so you can remove it.

A male bird who attacks his young should not be used for breeding again. Males usually help the hen with the raising, and although the hen can do it by herself it is very taxing on her. She shouldn't be allowed to breed again for at least 6 months to allow her to get her condition back.

Males will sometimes attack their babies because they want to mate again, but the hen is not interested because her energies are with her young, so the male gets rid of the problem standing between him and his urge to mate again.

After your chicks have weaned (eating themselves) it *should* be fine to put the male back in again, but I think you would be better to leave the chicks with the hen and the male seperate to avoid her breeding again too soon, and to ensure the chicks safety.

After the chicks have weaned (around 5 - 8 weeks...it can vary quite a bit chick to chick) they will be on the same sort of diet as your adults. Fresh water, pellets, seed, fresh fruit and veg and cuttlebone / mineral suppliments.

Be sure that the hen has a complete and varied diet to replace all the good stuff she lost raising her babies.|||keep the dad away i think because it will kill them and you will be sorry|||Hi,

The brown crust could be food just try picking it off or get some cotton wool etc to wash it off.

You need to remove the chicks at four weeks old, you can handle the chicks when they get feathered up.

Just feed them normal budgie seed and they don't need any bedding just a cage with food, water and perches, and a millet spray in the cage.
