How do you trim a parakeets beek?

We just rescued a small yellow and green ird which I believe to be a parakeet and it looks like his beek is well overgrown. Can I trim this myself or should I take it to a vet?|||You should take him to a vet. I don't think you can trim beaks but going to the vet and getting some tips wouldn't hurt ! Good Luck !|||Beaks can be trimmed, but like dog/cat toe nails, it has a quick. It is very important that the break is trimmed correctly, if it is not, the bird can't eat, and if cut to short - the bird will bled to death. You need to take it to the vet, and let them trim it down - (if it is overgrown). They have a tool they use, somewhat like a file. It is very safe and painless.|||An avian vet needs to do it for two reasons. 1) The beak has nerve endings and if done wrong, it's painful to the bird and can make it either bleed to death or starve because it hurts too much to eat. 2) Healthy birds' beaks don't overgrow. It's a sign of certain health problems, probably liver disease, that need medication prescribed.|||Talk to your vet.

I haven't had parakeets in a long time, but we had some sort of sandpaper-ish hanger that clipped onto the side of the cage that they could chew / scratch their beaks on. (Sorry that wasn't helpful, I was around 8 when we had parakeets.)|||Go to a vet! That way you can see how it is done and get advise on whether or not you should do it yourself. Birds beeks are a different story to for instance cats and rabbits nails, which you can easily do yourself.|||DON"t do this at home...it is very dangerous. only a vet should do this......you could end up with bleeding adn death as a result
